Recent Results

Just because we weren’t running from the ERC this weekend didn’t mean we didn’t stay busy. Most notably, Lindsey married Chris in Vermont on Saturday. Mike finished an Ironman triathlon in California. Leah rode a mountainous 60-mile bike event in Idaho. I spoke to a large group of running campers at Lake Tahoe, making a half-dozen of them honorary team members.

July 30th Preview

Joe is away this weekend, but you can still go out to play on Sunday. There’s a planned gap in our training schedule, but here’s a possible bonus run for those who want to join it:

Dorris Ranch (parking lot at restrooms) in Springfield at 7:30 a.m. If you’re training for Hood to Coast, Neal recommends an eight-mile run – which he’ll take. If your race is Florence or Oregon Women’s Half, I suggest going five or six miles. Our team training resumes next week at the latter distance.

Course is out and back, following the paved Middle Fork Path. Eight-mile turnaround is at Clearwater Park.

July 23rd Results (4.9 miles)

Away we go again. Today’s run was the first, leading toward Florence in September and the Women’s Half in October.

Two reminders: (1) the Wednesday group will meet as usual this week, 6 o’clock start from the Mill Race trailhead in Springfield; (2) no Sunday run next weekend, as I’ll be away and we have a “bye” week built into this schedule.

Thanks to Lindsey for opening the store this morning. Happy wedding Saturday from all of us.

July 23rd Preview

Our Coburg round of training is less than a week past, and we’re starting a new phase without pause. This Sunday we start building up mileage for the Florence Half-Marathon on September 24th – with an option of continuing to October 8th for the new Oregon Women’s Half.

The first run in our Sunday series is the traditional five miles (roughly). It starts from the Eugene Running Company at 8:00, with the store opening about 15 minutes earlier.

Sunday’s route: Oakway and Coburg Roads to Ferry Street Bridge and don’t cross. Turn right onto bike path, to Valley River footbridge and across. Turn left, to Ferry. Cross bridge and back to store. GPS distance is 4.87 miles (round up to 5.0 if you wish).

Bring a drink for delivery at about halfway, north end of Valley River bridge. Weather forecast: sunny with starting temperature in 60s.

WEEK ONE LESSON: YOUR PROGRAM

Question: What is the rationale behind this training program?

Answer: This half-marathon program is, fittingly, almost precisely half the one that our marathon teams follow successfully. You train as the marathoners do early in their program – except that 13.1 miles is your end point, and 11 miles is your longest training run. You also train under conditions that mimic those of the race. Our group runs are nearly flat. If you want hill training, add some to your midweek runs. Our Sunday runs are on hard surfaces, because that’s where the race is run. You can seek out softer ground during the week. You run no faster in Sunday training than you will go in the race. Practice for speed elsewhere.

Coburg Half results (and others)

The legacy continues into another year. This was the 16th summer in a row when some of our team and its predecessor (a UO class add-on) has run this Coburg race or its predecessor (Run in the Country).

Note that Neal, Mike and Leah all won their age groups. And that Michele greeted everyone at the finish as the medal-giving volunteer.

The Wednesday morning group will run from Alton Baker Park this week, six o’clock start. Basic distance is 5.7 miles, with option to go longer or shorter.
