May 5th Results (4.8 miles, etc.)

Today doubled as a farewell to the Eugene Marathon/Half team and a welcome to our team that officially trains for the Coburg Half. Many of you have additional or alternative plans. Those begin right away with the Hot Springs 18-mile trail race this Saturday for Bill, Amy, Laurel and Sean, plus the Sunday 13M for Michele.

Next Sunday we’ll offer a longer training run (10 miles) for the Newport Half, in addition to the 7M for Coburg.

Thanks for Lindsey and Kelly for welcoming us back to the store today.

Training for May-June 2019

Teamwork doesn’t stop with the Eugene Marathon or Half unless you want it to. We continue the following Sunday, with the program targeting the Coburg Half on June 22nd (note the move from its previous July date).

You can, of course, train for other races in this time frame (such as Grapes of Half or Newport). But you must make the necessary adjustments in training distances, and we can’t promise full support for all those runs.

We divide the year into two parts (winter-spring and summer-fall) and each of those into two segments of about two months each (which is the length of our half-marathon training cycle). Next will come the “second of the first,” if that makes any sense.

Most runs start at 8:00, with previews of the route emailed to registered runners each week. Weekly results are posted on our blog, http://joesteamrunners.blogspot.com.

Fees vary for this second two-month segment of 2019 training. If you already paid $75, you’re covered for May-June. If you paid $50 earlier, an additional $25 is due in May. If May is your first time with us this year, it’s a $50 fee. Let me know if you need your status report that way.

We welcome runners of all abilities and experience levels. However, we strongly recommend that half-marathoners have run at least four miles before this training begins. To reserve a spot on Joe’s Team, contact me at: joesrunteam@gmail.com.

The post-Eugene Marathon/Half schedule:

May 5th -- 5 miles to start Coburg Half-Marathon training

May 12th -- 7 miles (Hot Springs Trail Race on 11th & 12th)

May 19th -- 8 miles (Grapes of Half on 18th)

May 26th -- 9 miles

June 2nd -- 10 miles (Newport Marathon & Half on 1st)

June 9th -- 11 miles

June 15th -- 6 miles (on Saturday; Prost8K on 16th)

June 22nd -- Coburg Half-Marathon (7:00 start)

June 30th -- 5 miles

Summer training, starting July 14th, will target the Cottage Grove Half-Marathon (September 14th)… Fall training, from September 22nd, will build toward the EWEB Half (November 24th)…. Informal bonus training will continue on December Sundays, at no extra charge.

Eugene Marathon (plus half & 5K) Results

What a day – in both the kind weather and first-time (and maybe one-and-done) finish setting! I’m still digesting the experience you all gave yourselves and let me share. More details to follow in days to come.

A special mention here to Lindsey. She PRed in a Nevada marathon with 3:08 on Saturday, then flew home in time to coach her team. We share Leah, who ran a Boston Marathon qualifying time.

Eugene Marathon races the numbers…

396.1 official miles raced by this team this weekend.

100% finishers, or all 26 who started – which is our most important number.

26 to 71 age range of our Eugene team, Ben to Neal.

21 runners went faster in the race than their longest training run, with Ben the most improved at minus-1:16 per mile and Nobuko the best pacer at exactly the same average each time.

15-11, women vs. men, and the count would have been 12-11 if Michele, Carrie and Rhonda hadn’t rallied from late doubts to run.

4th fastest team woman marathoner ever is now Kate at 3:22.

3 debuts at their distances: Ben in the half, and Kate and Marcel in the marathon.

3 couples ran, Laurel-Matt in half, Kate-Marcel in marathon, and Nobuko-Russell with one in each.

2 Boston Marathon 2020 qualifiers, Kate and Leah.

1, Russell, ran his second marathon this year.

1, Trina, had run a marathon the week before. And 1, Amy, Boston was less than two weeks post-Boston.

1 age-group prize winner, with Neal 3rd in the 70-74 half.

#1 finishers from our team: Sean in the half, two weeks after his 50K (Rachel led women in the half), Kate in the marathon (Marcel led men).

1 ill-timed injury, as Scott sprained an ankle a few days before his marathon – after doing all the training.

1, John in 5K, missed my welcome at the Saturday finish line, but we more than made up for it by teaming up there on Sunday as he served as a key volunteer.

1 coach allowed close finish-line access; thanks to race director Richard Maher for granting that special welcome-back spot.
