May 20th Results (8 miles, etc.)

Agreement isn’t universal on this view, but I rated today as near perfect for running: temperature around 50, little wind, light cooling mist. Maybe that’s my view because nearly all of my best races were run on days like this. It reminds me of conditions on the coast, where many of us will be in less than two weeks.

Thanks to Lindsey for opening the store this morning. Results from Grapes of Half will be added below as soon as available.

May 6th Results (5.5 miles)

Last Sunday was the last time Eugene road racers will run through the open gate and onto the Hayward Field track to finish. Now the gate is locked. In too few weeks it will be gone, along with all other remnants of the old stadium.

That’s why we revisited there today. The distance split the difference between our usual start at five miles and the scheduled six.

This served as both the end of the Eugene Marathon/Half program and the start of what lies ahead for us in races through mid-July.

Thanks, always, to Lindsey for opening the store this morning.

TODAY’S 5.5 MILES

Training for May-June (and into July)

Our spring training doesn’t end in Eugene on April 29th. Our next round starts the very next week, covering May-June, with the option of extending to mid-July.

Call it spring. We all know this season lasts through the Fourth of July and often a little beyond. So does our next program.

As usual, it mainly targets half-marathons. Our big one this time is Love Liberates on the Springfield bike paths, June 23rd. Some runners peak earlier at Newport (where many will go on June 2nd), later at Coburg (July 14th), or elsewhere . I can help adjust your training distances for those.

You’re aiming for other events – shorter ones (such as Prost8K or Butte to Butte), longer ones (Newport Marathon), other halves, track or trail races, triathlons, relays? You’re still welcome to join us if our training amounts hold value for you. Add your own specifics for those special events.

Payment: Many of you already paid from January to June (which extends to the Coburg Half in July at no extra cost). I’ll let you know individually of credits already earned. Your cost is either none, $25 or $50, depending on earlier winter-spring 2018 payments.

Training distances for most of our runners, with runs usually starting at 8:00 a.m. from the Eugene Running Company:

May 6th – 6 miles
May 13th – 7 miles, with longer advised for Newport
May 20th – 8 miles
May 27th – 9 miles, or 6 for Newport

June 2nd – Newport Half and Marathon (on Saturday)
June 3rd – 10 miles (Joe is away)
June 10th – 11 miles
June 16th – 6 miles (on Saturday before Sunday’s Prost8K)
June 23rd – Love Liberates Half (on Saturday in Springfield)

July 1st – 6 miles, or 11 if not in Liberates
July 8th – 6 miles (and/or Butte to Butte 10K on 4th)
July 14th – Coburg Half (on Saturday)

The final two programs for this year will cover about two months each: (1) starting in late July for the Florence Half on September 22nd, with Oregon Women’s Half on October 7th as an option; (2) starting in late September for the EWEB Half on November 18th, with Holiday Half on December 15th as an option. Training mileages will match those listed above. The cost will be $50 for one round of training or $75 for both.
