Training for May-June (and into July)

Our spring training doesn’t end in Eugene on April 29th. Our next round starts the very next week, covering May-June, with the option of extending to mid-July.

Call it spring. We all know this season lasts through the Fourth of July and often a little beyond. So does our next program.

As usual, it mainly targets half-marathons. Our big one this time is Love Liberates on the Springfield bike paths, June 23rd. Some runners peak earlier at Newport (where many will go on June 2nd), later at Coburg (July 14th), or elsewhere . I can help adjust your training distances for those.

You’re aiming for other events – shorter ones (such as Prost8K or Butte to Butte), longer ones (Newport Marathon), other halves, track or trail races, triathlons, relays? You’re still welcome to join us if our training amounts hold value for you. Add your own specifics for those special events.

Payment: Many of you already paid from January to June (which extends to the Coburg Half in July at no extra cost). I’ll let you know individually of credits already earned. Your cost is either none, $25 or $50, depending on earlier winter-spring 2018 payments.

Training distances for most of our runners, with runs usually starting at 8:00 a.m. from the Eugene Running Company:

May 6th – 6 miles
May 13th – 7 miles, with longer advised for Newport
May 20th – 8 miles
May 27th – 9 miles, or 6 for Newport

June 2nd – Newport Half and Marathon (on Saturday)
June 3rd – 10 miles (Joe is away)
June 10th – 11 miles
June 16th – 6 miles (on Saturday before Sunday’s Prost8K)
June 23rd – Love Liberates Half (on Saturday in Springfield)

July 1st – 6 miles, or 11 if not in Liberates
July 8th – 6 miles (and/or Butte to Butte 10K on 4th)
July 14th – Coburg Half (on Saturday)

The final two programs for this year will cover about two months each: (1) starting in late July for the Florence Half on September 22nd, with Oregon Women’s Half on October 7th as an option; (2) starting in late September for the EWEB Half on November 18th, with Holiday Half on December 15th as an option. Training mileages will match those listed above. The cost will be $50 for one round of training or $75 for both.

We can hope/dream/pray for a day like this next Sunday. Whatever comes, though, the race will go on. A history of good-weather days on Eugene weekend is on our side.

April 15th Results (10 & 11 miles, etc.)

Our Eugene marathoners peaked in training distance last Sunday, in the rain. Now our half-marathoners have done the same, again on a wet morning. Eleven years of history tell us that race day will be better.

Weekend races occupied several of us: Bill, Kathy B. and Michele at Saturday’s Hot Springs Trail 18, and Neal at the Corvallis Half on Sunday. See their results below.

A big thank-you to Bob Coll at the Eugene Running Company for supplying the latest team shirts. They’re fluorescent-yellow beauties! If you didn’t claim yours this Sunday, you can next Sunday. We plan to make that our photo day.

Thanks to Lindsey for opening the store this morning, and for handing out shirts. Thanks to Becky for helping on the course.

April 8th (21 & 10 miles)

A full and weather-wacky weekend began on Saturday with the wind-whipped Cottage Grove Half-Marathon, reported more fully in a separate blog. Note that Leah and Neal won age-group awards.

Sunday brought squally, sleety, even tantalizingly sunny conditions. Our marathoners peaked in distance, with four of the seven going their longest ever: Kristin, Scott, Dean and Trina. Our halfers are a week away from their final step up in training.

Thanks to Gabe for supporting his runner at Cottage Grove. And to Becky, Ann and JoAnna for on-course help today.

Cottage Grove Half-Marathon

This is six-sevenths of our team at Saturday's Cottage Grove Half-Marathon. They don't look entirely joyous pre-race, while facing the forecast of heavy rains and high winds.

That guess was only half right, the windy part. It didn't stop any of our seven from finishing. First of those is missing from this shot, as Leah Kirkland won her age group. Neal Benson placed second in his.

SATURDAY'S COTTAGE GROVE HALF

(with official results and paces; target was to run faster than last long training run)

Neal -- 2:18:59 (10:36 pace)

Leah -- 1:40:23 (7:40s)
Sean -- 1:55:48 (8:50s)
